preparing your children for a photography session

July 4, 2023

As both a photographer and a mother, I understand that photographing young children can be both exciting and challenging. Their energy, curiosity, and ever-changing moods can make it a bit unpredictable. However, with a little preparation and collaboration, we can create a fun and memorable photography session for your young ones. Here are some tips to help make your child’s photography session a smooth and enjoyable experience:

  1. Explain what to expect ― Children tend to be less anxious when they know what to expect. Before the session, take the time to communicate with your children about what to expect. Explain that a friendly photographer will be taking their pictures and emphasize how exciting and fun it will be. I like for my sessions to be relaxed and playful, so we will do lots of cuddling and play some games together! This will help ease any anxiety and prepare them for the experience.

  2. Get them excited ― Talk to your children about the photography session in a positive light, and let them know how excited you are to have these memories captured. Talking to them about the location and the games we can play is a great way to build anticipation for the upcoming session. Children are more likely to be themselves and express their natural joy when engaged in playful activities. This could include jumping, twirling, blowing bubbles, or even having a little dance party. Creating a playful environment will bring out their genuine expressions and make the session a delightful experience. Share with them how much fun it will be to look back on these photos in the future.

  3. Dress them comfortably ― Choosing comfortable clothing for your children is essential. Avoid outfits that are too tight, itchy, or restrictive. Opt for simple, classic styles in soft, loose-fitting fabrics that allow freedom of movement. Comfortable children are more likely to be relaxed and enjoy the session, leading to more natural and candid photographs.

  4. Provide snacks and water ― Hungry or thirsty children can become irritable and lose interest quickly. Be sure to have small, portable snacks and water on hand during the session. These quick refreshments can provide a much-needed energy boost and keep your children engaged and happy throughout the session. Remember to choose snacks that are not messy and won’t stain their clothing.

  5. Reward them ― Introduce a reward to motivate and encourage your children during the photography session. Discuss with them beforehand and explain that if they cooperate and participate, there will be a special treat or activity afterward. It could be a small toy, a favorite snack, or a fun outing. This positive reinforcement will create excitement and make the session more enjoyable for everyone involved. The trick is to not make this seem too much like a bribe!

  6. Take breaks ― Young children have short attention spans and may become easily fatigued or overwhelmed during a photography session. Plan for short breaks throughout the session to allow them to recharge and relax. Take advantage of these breaks to engage with them, play games, or let them explore the surroundings. Tip: don’t use language like “focus”, “stop that”, or “look at the camera” when you feel like your child isn’t cooperating. This often has the opposite effect and can upset your child into tears or cause them to completely shut down during their session. Let them ride out the moment! These moments can provide natural and candid opportunities for capturing beautiful photographs.

  7. Bring familiar items ― To help your children feel more comfortable and at ease during the session, encourage them to bring their favorite toys, blankets, or stuffed animals. These familiar objects can provide a sense of security and help them relax in front of the camera. Incorporating these items into the photographs can also add a personal touch and make the session more meaningful.

  8. Expect the unexpected ― Children can be unpredictable, and that’s part of their charm. As a photographer, I understand that patience is key when working with young ones. Don’t worry if they get shy or if their attention wanders; it’s all part of the process. Allow them to explore and be themselves while gently guiding them through the session. A relaxed and patient approach will create a comfortable atmosphere, allowing their personalities to shine through.

Preparing your young children for a photography session requires attention to their comfort, needs, and preferences. By keeping these tips in mind, you can create a relaxed and enjoyable environment for them and make your photography session a fun and memorable experience for everyone involved!
